Morgan State University: New Library

A collaborative effort between DCI/Sasaki/FON, this project involves the construction of a new library for Morgan State University, approximately 227,000 gross square feet of new construction on a recently demolished Murphy Fine Arts Building site.  The new library will have a partial basement containing a receiving area, storage and mechanical spaces, three floors of book collection stacks, study spaces and offices and a partial fourth floor containing a conference center with support spaces and offices for visiting scholars.

Major program spaces include a meeting room/ exhibit gallery with adjacent lounge, a main reading room, collection space for 450,000 volumes on open shelving with historic collection in compact shelving.  Study spaces include two IT Open Labs and one IT classroom as well as group study rooms, individual study rooms and open study areas distributed throughout the building. Staff support areas are dispersed on all three levels in an open office work environment.

An elaborate east reading area is set in an atrium environment with smoke management system. The east wall of the building is a transparent curtain wall system, which allows the view of the anigre wood veneer wall, an architectural feature on the project.
