Cherry Hill Homes Modernization is a public housing upgrade and modernization project for The Housing Authority of Baltimore City. This urban multi-family revitalization project involved the reconfiguration and redesign of 167 public housing units into more spacious and modernized 157 town homes and contemporary apartments. The project was also designed in keeping with the accessibility standards of the Fair Housing Act and the “visitability” goals of Housing Authority of Baltimore City.. At least 25 percent of these units a re “visitable” as required by Housing Authority of Baltimore City. Additionally, 5% of the units are accessible to mobility impaired people; and 2% accessible to the visually and hearing impaired. The modernization plan utilized two design strategies to promote a safe, stable and secure neighborhood. First, the plan established clearly defined front yards and secure, fenced back yards that encourage individual “ownership” and responsibility for the neighborhood. Secondly, the plan orients houses and new bay windows and porches towards the streets. Front entries, porches wand windows look out into public domain, providing “eyes on the streets” and surveillance of the neighborhood. |
